GEO (generative engine optimization)

Also called: AI SEO, answer engine optimization, AEO

GEO is the practice of being found, trusted and quoted inside AI-generated answers — in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Google's AI Overviews — rather than ranked in a list of links.

The techniques overlap heavily with SEO: a crawler still has to reach the page, the content still has to be relevant, and the source still has to be credible. What differs is the unit of success. Answers are assembled from passages, so a page that ranks first but buries its answer under three paragraphs of build-up may never be quoted, while a clearly structured page at position eight can be.

Nobody publishes citation criteria, so every framework — including ours — is inference from published analyses. What those analyses agree on is directional: cited sources are accessible without JavaScript, structured, specific, dated, and corroborated by other independent sources. Our GEO scorecard weights those factors and returns the gaps worth closing first.
